The Business Journal recognized local women for their leadership and efforts in making their businesses, their industries, and their communities better.
With more than 20 years of experience, Tessmer continues to grow her firm, which specializes in practice areas including divorce, child support, personal injury, and estate planning.
Why is it important to have women in leadership?
Women are important in leadership positions to bring a diversity of thought and perspective to the decision-making process. Men and women just think differently, and it is always a good thing to hear ideas, concerns, and feedback from as many different sources as possible when making a decision or learning about new ideas.
Who has had the most impact on your leadership style?
My family is so patient with me. They have had the biggest impact on my leadership style. The constant feedback and ideas have helped me realize, at times, that I am set in my ways and need to see the world differently and to be more tolerant of new and strange (to me) ideas. Also, they don’t put up with too much B.S. and will call me out on it when I need it.
How have you paid it forward to other women?
Being on the National Association of Women Business Owners board has given me so many opportunities to pay it forward to other women. Having the opportunity to mentor up-and-coming businesswomen and students, helping with the governance committee, and being a part of all of the wonderful programs for young women on their way up has been fun. Also, this last fall semester, I was invited to teach as an adjunct professor at St. Mary’s University School of Law. Working with the students was exhausting, but gratifying.
How did Covid-19 impact your life?
Most of our team members stayed home for the month of April 2020. Since then, we have mostly been back in the office practicing safe distancing. We have worked harder than ever since then because of the consequences of families being in close quarters for so long… our divorce clients are way up!
